Virtual reality is already here! The VR helmets

The main manufacturers of VR headsets for computers are 3 companies: Oculus, HTC, and Valve. The first manufacturer delivers portable headsets and devices for home use to the market. HTC produces models that support Steam. We should also not forget about Sony, which created the PlayStation VR for PS 4. VR headsets are also offered by such giants as Samsung and Google. Therefore, we can say that the market for VR devices is rapidly expanding.

There are 3 main categories of VR devices:

• for home use;

  • portable type;
  • mobile (consists of a case where you need to place your smartphone).

The home VR headset connects to a PC. It is represented by such models as Vive Cosmos (from HTC), Valve Index, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift S.

Virtual reality mobile devices are inexpensive. For $ 100, you can buy a good model. But it is impossible to call such a headset multifunctional, since they give only 3 degrees of freedom – you can track the direction with your eyes, but without moving your head.

HTC virtual reality devices

This manufacturer introduced two main models: Vive and Vive Cosmos. The first model allows the user to move inside the cube, the sides of which are 3.5 m. you need to Control the game using special controllers. For normal operation of the headset, the computer processor must be no weaker than Intel Core i5-4590. You will also need a good video card – no worse than Intel Core i5-4590.

Sony PlayStation VR

There will not be a particularly high resolution, but this is compensated by a sufficiently high update speed, so that the user does not immediately throw up. The advantage of this headset is that it is enough for PlayStation 4, which is cheaper than a gaming computer.

Oculus Rift S

The resolution of this device is better than in HTC’s Vive. In addition, you can buy a lot of good VR games in the Oculus Store. The headset can also work with SteamVR, although there may be failures.

Windows Mixed Reality

Microsoft has partnered with some of the developers of VR devices with support for Windows 10. But the headset mostly belongs to the “mixed reality” series. Microsoft partners are the following companies: Lenovo, Acer, HP, Samsung, and others.

The advantage of Microsoft headsets is that they are easy to configure and have fairly good characteristics, although tracking accuracy is not sufficient. In addition, there are not many games in the company’s store. If you work with the software settings, you can run games from SteamVR.

Valve Index

Such a headset costs around a thousand dollars, but also do not forget about the need for a good gaming computer. These prices are not very popular with consumers, even despite the impressive technical characteristics of the device (refresh rate of 120 Hz). It uses the most advanced control system.

VR devices that don’t need a PC

For those who want a cheap dip into the world of virtual reality, there are options for helmets without connecting to a PC. For example, a fairly good device is the Oculus Go. Of course, there are only 3 degrees of freedom, not 6 as in cool helmets, but for an acceptable price you need to compromise.

Oculus Quest will cost twice as much, but this headset is worth it. The Snapdragon 835 processor is installed here. But more importantly, there are 6 degrees of freedom and paired controllers.

In addition to these devices, there is also a Lenovo Mirage Solo, but its controller supports only 3 degrees of freedom, so the device’s capabilities are limited. But the Vive Focus line appeared on the market of virtual reality devices recently. The Vive Focus Plus model has 6 degrees of freedom and is Autonomous. HTC positions its products as those intended for the corporate market. It focuses on the usefulness of its devices for conferences and trainings.
